“Rather, speaking the truth
in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the
head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held
together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each
part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it
builds itself up in love”
(Ephesians 4:15-16).
March
is the month where Lutheran schools all over the nation
celebrate their ministry during National Lutheran Schools
Week. Immanuel Lutheran School is one of nine Lutheran
elementary schools in the Minnesota North District, one of
fifty-nine in Minnesota, and one of 1,026 in the LCMS.
Together our elementary schools are sharing the Gospel
message with over 140,899 students and their families on a
daily basis. This doesn’t include our daycares, preschools
or high schools.
What a
ministry! What a mission!
Lutheran schools do not share this mission
alone. Paul’s letters to the Ephesians are about the church
and about the fellowship of believers who make up the
church. Ephesians 4 reminds us that God prepares each of us
for special works of service so that the body of Christ may
be built up until we reach unity in the faith and the
knowledge of the Son of God. There is a story by an
anonymous writer that paints a picture of how God calls us
to use the unique gifts He has given us so that the full
measure of Christ may be accomplished.
THE CARPENTER’S TOOLS
Someone has imagined the Carpenter’s tools
holding a conference. Brother Hammer presided. Several
suggested he leave the meeting because he was too noisy.
Replied the Hammer, “If I have to leave this shop, Brother
Screw must go also. You have to turn him around again and
again to get him to accomplish anything.”
Brother Screw then spoke up, “if you wish, I’ll
leave. But Brother Plane must leave too. All his work is
on the surface. His efforts have no depth.” To this
Brother Plane responded, “Brother Rule will also have to
withdraw, for he is always measuring folks as though he were
the only one who is right.”
Brother Rule then complained against Brother
Sandpaper: “You ought to leave too because you’re so rough
and always rub people the wrong way.”
In the midst of all this discussion, in walked
the Carpenter of Nazareth. He had arrived to start His
day’s work. Putting on His apron, He went to the bench to
make a pulpit from which to proclaim the Gospel. He
employed the hammer, screw, plane, rule, sandpaper, and all
the other tools. After the day’s work when the pulpit was
finished, Brother Saw arose and remarked: “Brethren, I
observe that all of us are workers together with the Lord.”
As partners in our congregation, community and
school, we are about the business of growing, developing and
transforming lives in all areas of faith and life. May God
continue to bless our efforts to ensure that our school
continues to be a great place to grow.
