Called to be
Disciples
"While walking
by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is
called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the
seas, for they were fishermen. And he said the them,
'Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.'"
(Matthew 4:18-19)
Make no mistake.
The job title "Disciple" belongs to more than pastors,
Lutheran school teachers, directors of Christian education,
and other church work professionals.
While some
disciples choose formal training for service in the Name of
Jesus, every employed Christian also is involved in
discipleship. Therefore, Christians have jobs for
Jesus whether or not they seek or acquire formal education
for any career.
Consider the
fisherman, Peter and Andrew. They and Jesus must have
been the subject of many dinner conversations. Can you
imagine Jesus choosing a pair of fishing partners to carry
on His work? Can you imagine the language, er...
skills, they must have acquired from hours of wet, smelly,
and somewhat unpredictable work? And what could they
know about communications, much less theology? What
did Jesus see in them that others couldn't see?
The truth is that
others saw in Peter and Andrew exactly what Jesus saw!
These were men seemingly locked in a lifetime job.
They were uneducated. Certainly unclean! The
outdoors type, more at home on water than on the dusty
highways Jesus traveled. And sinners! Maybe even
expert sinners. That's what they were!
Jesus didn't need
people with degrees or clean fingernails. In fact,
Jesus didn't need anybody! But He chose common people
for uncommon discipleship. Jesus' hand-picked
disciples came from various jobs and careers. The
fisherman brothers were joined by a doctor and a tax
collector to name a few. Through worldly eyes, the 12
disciples appeared to be a rather unusual group of chosen
individuals.
Jesus uses
people, both highly educated and uneducated, both rich and
poor, to spread His message of love and forgiveness.
He uses sinners to do this. Always has. Always
will. By using people of various skills and status,
Jesus shows His power.
What does Jesus
see in you? A sinner. Lost and condemned without
Him. He died and rose to save you. Through
Grace, you become one of His own, and He extends the
invitation to follow Him in all your ways.
Jesus can and
will use you as His disciple regardless of the career path
you choose or have chosen. In fact, He is already
calling you. Put your discipleship into daily use.
Get into His Word. Make prayer a daily habit. Be
in His service as a caring witness to others.

If you cannot speak like angels
If you cannot preach like Paul,
You can tell the love of Jesus,
You can say He died for all.
If you cannot rouse the wicked
With the judgment's dread alarms,
You can lead the little children
To the Savior's waiting arms.
|
Let none hear you idly saying,
"There is nothing I can Do,"
While the souls of men are dying
And the Master calls for you.
Take the tasks He gives you gladly,
Let His work your pleasure be;
Answer quickly when He calleth,
"Here am I, send me!"

LOGO CHANGE
You
may have noticed that our school logo has
changed from Immanuel Lutheran to Immanuel
Christian School. This does not mean that
we are not part of the LCMS or Immanuel Lutheran
Church but that we are first and foremost a
Christian school open to all denominations.
We also have a new website and the only address
available was Immanuel Christian School.
For advertising purposes we felt it was
necessary to make this change. Please
check us out immanuelchristianschool.us.
