OUR GUIDING LIGHT
One of my favorite scenes is that of a lighthouse high up on
a cliff serving as a guide and comfort for passing sailors.
The lighthouse stands firm and strong, it’s light piercing
through the dense fog and stormy weather. Each lighthouse
is unique both in its outward appearance and the kind of
guidance it gives.
There are several different types of lights used.
*
Making lights are
the first lights a sailor sees when he is making
land.
* Coasting lights are the
lights that guide a ship along the coastline.
* Leading lights direct
ships up the channels or into the harbors.
Various lights are used to tell one lighthouse from
another. Some lights are fixed with a long, steady beam.
Others flash off and on. Others flash more light than
dark. Some use red and green lights. Sometimes flashes of
lights are arranged in groups.
To us it may seem confusing and impossible to tell which
lighthouse is which and in what way it is guiding you. But
sailors have a book called “light lists”, put out by the
coast guard, which shows the signals given out by each
lighthouse.
The lighthouse is often used as a symbol for our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ. His light is the first light we see as
we sail into this world. His light is the light that guides
us along the right path and into the safe harbor of heaven.
We need not get confused by other flashing lights of this
world as our coast guard, God, has also given us a book
called “The Bible” to keep us focused on His light. “The
light that shines in the darkness.” (John 1:5) Jesus
promises, “I am the light of the world; he that followeth me
shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of
life.” (John 8:12)
Remember this new year to look to Christ as the guiding
light of your life.
In Christ, Janna Kietzman
