A GREAT PLACE TO GROW - GROWING IN CHRIST

THE GREATEST GIFT

And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.  And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.  He will be GREAT, and will be called Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there will be no end.”  Luke 1:30-33

            GREAT!   GREAT!   GREAT!

It’s a word we use often and probably without too much thought.  We talk about a great idea, a great trip, a great number of things to do, a great grandchild, a great big hug, a great legendary football player, a great catch of fish, being great at softball, and being a great person.

The angel told Mary, “(Jesus) will be great.”  Mary must have wondered what the angel meant.  How would Jesus be great?  What would He do?  Where would He go?

By the world’s standard, as Jesus lived on this earth, He was not great.  He had no money, no prominent position, no collection of material things, and no fancy home.  He was born in a lowly stable, of lowly birth, and His friends included fishermen, tax collectors, beggars, the lame, blind, poor, hungry, and sick.

Yet we who are Christians know that Jesus was great.  But His greatness was not found in power, money, looks, intellect, possessions, or friendships.  Jesus’ greatness was found in who He was -- “the Son of the Most High.”

How great is our God!  How great is His love!  How great is His plan of salvation —

For  you, for me, for all sinners!

During this Christmas season, may we all share the great gift of Christmas — the Babe born in Bethlehem — with great joy, great enthusiasm, and great peace.

Andy Arnold and Lou Eckhoff visited the 4th-6th grade students to share the history and events of WWII.  Andy served at Normandy and brought his medals and artifacts to show the students.  Lou showed the children on a map where and how the events unfolded.

On leave from Iraq, Army SSGT. Jeff Anderson talked with the students about his work.  He answered questions and showed them pictures of his experiences.  Jeff also presented the students and staff with a certificate and United States flag that was flown for Immanuel Lutheran School Oct. 14 over the Able Company Command Post at Camp Taqaddum, Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.  It was a privilege to have Jeff visiting with us.

BIBLE BOWL

The 5th & 6th grade classes participated in the Lutheran School Bible Bowl held Nov. 4 at Family of Christ Lutheran School in Baxter.  They competed with other 6th grade teams in 6 different rounds.  Each round was 6 minutes long with 10 questions. They had a great time and worked well as a team.  It is neat to see how much the students in our Lutheran schools are remembering from their religious training and just how much more there is to learn.   GREAT JOB!

Thanks to everyone who helped with the Pie fundraiser and who purchased pies.  The students sold 351 pies!  WOW!  The pie baking assembly worked like a well oiled machine making over 351 pies.  AMAZING!  A special thanks to Esther Burns for organizing the event.
